Photoessay: Graboyes visits Finishing Trades Institute of the Mid-Atlantic Region

A high school student tries out the virtual welding simulator, a safe, energy-efficient, and feedback-rich method for apprentices to gain welding skills before moving to the real-life welding room.

At Graboyes Commercial, we’re very proud of the exceptionally well-trained union crews of carpenters and glaziers who work for us, maintain OSHA 30 training, and complete required testing for school and government projects. We recently had the chance to visit the Finishing Trades Institute of the Mid-Atlantic Region (FTI) in Philadelphia, where the glazier portion of our crew receives their training. The FTI produces some of the best journeypersons, supervisors, and project managers in North America with its unique learning environment and competency-based training model as recommended by the U.S. Department of Labor.

Because of its emphasis on organizational development, leadership, and team building principles, FTI students become responsible and effective communicators who are proud of their abilities to acquire advanced skills and lead on a jobsite, which increases productivity and morale.

Each student graduates as a journeyperson with 60+ college credits and an associates degree in construction technologies.
